AFF Claims Deadly Attacks on Taliban in Takhar and Herat

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – The Afghanistan Freedom Front (AFF), an armed anti-Taliban group, says its fighters have killed five Taliban members and injured four others in attacks in Takhar and Herat provinces.

In statements posted on X on Sunday, the armed group said the attacks took place on Saturday evening, February 8.

In Takhar, AFF fighters reportedly targeted a Taliban intelligence convoy in Taleqan, the provincial capital, killing three Taliban members and wounding two others. The armed group accused the targeted Taliban agents of harassing local residents.

In Herat city, the AFF says its fighters attacked a Taliban checkpoint near the Mostofiat mosque, killing two Taliban fighters and injuring two others.

Local Taliban officials in Takhar and Herat have not commented on the attacks.

The AFF, led by General Yasin Zia, a former Chief of Personnel of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF), was formed after the Taliban’s return to power in 2021. The group, largely composed of former ANDSF personnel, has conducted multiple attacks against the Taliban, particularly in Panjshir, Kabul, Balkh, and surrounding areas.

In his latest quarterly report on Afghanistan, released on December 12, UN Secretary-General António Guterres documented 18 verified AFF attacks on the Taliban over a three-month period. He noted that most of the attacks occurred in Kabul, as well as in the western and northern regions.
