KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – The Taliban’s police command in Badakhshan has reported that a young man fatally stabbed his mother in the Kashm district of the province.
Ehsanullah Kamgar, spokesperson for the Taliban’s police command in Badakhshan, told KabulNow that the incident occurred on the evening of January 6 in the village of Mominabad.
The motive behind the killing is still unclear, Kamgar stated, adding that the perpetrator has been arrested, and an investigation is underway.
This marks the fourth reported case of mothers being killed by their sons in Afghanistan in recent months, with similar incidents previously recorded in Herat, Baghlan, and Faryab provinces.
This tragic incident is emblematic of a broader surge in gender-based violence in Afghanistan, which has escalated since the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021.
From January 2022 to June 2024, Afghan Witness, a project of the Center for Information Resilience, documented 700 incidents of violence against 840 women and girls in Afghanistan. These cases included femicide, physical abuse, sexual assault, torture, enforced disappearances, and other forms of violence targeting women and girls.
Experts, activists, and UN representatives have described the Taliban’s actions as a form of gender apartheid.
