KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – A 28-year-old Afghan man has been arrested in connection with a knife attack in Aschaffenburg, Germany, that resulted in the deaths of two people, including a child.
The incident occurred in a park at around 10:45 local time on Wednesday, January 22. German police said the suspect was detained at the scene. Two other people were seriously injured and are currently receiving treatment in hospital.
German police have said that there is no evidence of additional suspects and assured the public that there is no ongoing threat. The motive for the attack remains unclear, and further details about the suspect have not been disclosed.
This attack comes after two similar incidents in Germany last year. In June, a 19-year-old Afghan immigrant was arrested for stabbing and injuring a Ukrainian woman in a park in Frankfurt. In May, Sulaiman Ataee, a 25-year-old Afghan man, attacked a gathering of “Pax Europa,” a far-right group opposing Islam in Europe, killing a police officer and injuring six civilians. Ataee had been living in Germany since the age of 15.
Following these incidents, German authorities announced plans to deport Afghan citizens convicted of serious crimes. In August 2024, Germany resumed deportations after a long suspension, sending 28 convicted Afghans back to Taliban-controlled Afghanistan.
In response to past incidents, Afghan citizens and activists in Germany have organized rallies to express solidarity with victims’ families and condemn acts of violence. Rally participants emphasized that such individuals do not represent Afghan immigrants and voiced support for German efforts to address crime and terrorism.
