AFF Reports Attack on Bagram Airfield, Claims Five Taliban Casualties

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN –  The Afghanistan Freedom Front (AFF), an armed anti-Taliban group, reports that its fighters targeted the entrance gate of Bagram Airfield in Parwan, resulting in the deaths and injuries of five Taliban members.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the AFF said that the attack took place on Thursday evening, November 21, and left three Taliban members dead, including a commander named Mullah Zakir, and two others injured.

The armed resistance group said the attack was a response to the Taliban’s recent detention and torture of hundreds of civilians, particularly former ANDSF members, across several provinces, who were then transferred to Bagram prison.

The Taliban authorities have yet to comment on the attack.

The AFF, largely composed of former ANDSF members and led by General Yasin Zia, the former Chief of Personnel of the ANDSF, was formed after the collapse of the previous government and the Taliban’s return to power in 2021.

Since then, the AFF has engaged in deadly battles with the Taliban, particularly in Panjshir, Kabul, and neighboring provinces. The group claims to have killed dozens of Taliban members across Afghanistan over the past three years.

In recent months, the armed group has intensified its guerrilla attacks against the Taliban, targeting military bases and checkpoints in several major cities. Last month, the group launched a rocket attack on the military section of Kabul Airport, causing casualties and financial losses for the Taliban.

While the Taliban attempts to downplay the impact of the armed group and its attacks, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres documented at least 21 verified AFF attacks over a three-month period (May to July) in his report to the UN Security Council in September.

The AFF claims to have carried out 230 attacks against the Taliban over the past two years, resulting in the deaths of 600 Taliban members and the injury of 700 others.
