KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – Heavy rains and subsequent flooding in Nangarhar province, eastern Afghanistan, have resulted in the deaths of at least three people and injuries to over 20 others, according to local sources.
Speaking with KabulNow today, the source said the rain and flooding occurred in the Kuz Kunar district last night, September 26.
According to the source, in addition to human casualties, the natural disaster caused significant financial losses for residents, destroying at least 200 homes and hundreds of hectares of farmland.
Local Taliban authorities have confirmed the incident, noting that the exact toll of casualties and damages remains unclear.
Afghanistan has been struggling with persistent heavy rains and flooding in recent months, resulting in hundreds of deaths and injuries. These natural disasters have also claimed the lives of thousands of livestock and caused significant financial losses for the already impoverished population.
The UN reported earlier that the rains and floods in April and May alone have resulted in over 500 deaths and more than 2,000 injuries across Afghanistan.
Additionally, approximately 80,000 people have been affected by the natural disaster, with over 10,000 homes either destroyed or damaged, resulting in the displacement of thousands of families.
Afghanistan is considered one of the most vulnerable countries to natural disasters, including floods, earthquakes, landslides, droughts, and avalanches. It also ranks among the poorest nations due to decades of conflict, political instability, and extreme weather events linked to climate change.
According to the UN, nearly 24 million people, mostly women and children, require lifesaving aid this year. The organization has appealed for $3.06 billion in funding for Afghanistan but has received only 30% of that amount so far, with just three months remaining in the year.
