Two Young Men Killed in Eastern Afghanistan Amid Surge in Mysterious Killings

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – Local sources in eastern Nangarhar province reported that two young men were recently killed by unknown gunmen in two separate incidents in the province.

Speaking with KabulNow today, the sources identified one of the victims as Basir Ahmad, who was shot and killed near his home in Sherzad district on Thursday, August 15.

The sources identified the other victim as Samsoor, who was killed by unknown gunmen in Chaparhar district. According to the sources, Samsoor had recently returned from Europe to visit his family in the province.

The motive behind the incidents remains unclear, and the perpetrators have not yet been identified.

The Taliban local authorities in Nangarhar have not yet commented on the incidents.

These incidents add to a surge in mysterious killings and criminal activities across Afghanistan in recent years. The country’s citizens are increasingly concerned about their safety and security, which adds to the mounting challenges they face since the Taliban’s takeover, despite the Taliban’s claims of maintaining security.

Former government officials, especially former ANDSF members, and activists are particularly vulnerable, as media outlets frequently report their killings by unknown gunmen or Taliban security forces.

Last week, our sources reported the killing of a former ANDSF member named Abdul Zahir, who served as a commander in the National Security Directorate under the previous government, by unidentified gunmen in southern Helmand province.

Moreover, over the past three years, the regime in power in Afghanistan has detained, tortured, and killed hundreds of civilians, former government officials, and members of the previous security forces across the country.

On Tuesday, a young man named Hamid Jalal was killed by Taliban members in Kabul. Reports indicate that he was shot and killed by the Taliban while driving his vehicle and passing a Taliban convoy.

In a post on X, Abdul Matin Qani, the spokesperson for the Taliban Ministry of Interior, confirmed the incident and stated that an investigation is underway.

Two weeks ago, Taliban agents killed two former ANDSF members, Fahim and Milad, in Afghanistan’s eastern Parwan province, accusing them of collaborating with armed resistance groups.

In its quarterly report released last month, the UN mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) documented at least 60 instances of arbitrary arrests and detentions, 10 cases of torture and ill-treatment, and five killings of former soldiers and officials from the previous government.
