Armed Opposition Group Claims Killing Three Taliban Intelligence Agents in Herat

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – The National Resistance Front (NRF), an armed anti-Taliban group, claimed to have killed three Taliban intelligence agents, including the deputy head of the reconnaissance unit of the regime’s border battalion, in western Herat province.

In a post on X on Saturday, the NRF stated that its “freedom fighters” carried out an operation targeting a Taliban checkpoint behind the Herat airport in Guzara district on the evening of Friday, August 2.

According to the statement, three Taliban agents, including Mawlawi Nematullah Arzghani, the deputy head of the reconnaissance unit of the regime’s border battalion, were killed in the operation.

The armed resistance group said that none of its forces were killed or injured in the operation.

Taliban authorities have yet to comment on these attack.

The NRF and the Afghanistan Freedom Front (AFF), composed mainly of former security forces, have engaged in numerous clashes with the Taliban. Recently, they have intensified their guerrilla attacks against the Taliban throughout Afghanistan.

This week, the NRF has reported six operations against the Taliban in Kabul, Kapisa, Badghis, Herat, and Parwan provinces, claiming to have killed and injured at least 16 Taliban members.

While the Taliban downplay the impact of these armed groups and their attacks, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres noted in his report released in June that these groups had conducted at least 43 verified attacks on Taliban forces in the past three months.

In its annual report released on March 19, the NRF claimed that during the solar year 1402 (March 21, 2023, to March 18, 2024), its fighters killed and injured over 400 Taliban members.

The NRF stated that during this period, it carried out 150 guerrilla operations against the Taliban in 17 provinces of Afghanistan, resulting in the deaths of 194 members of the “Taliban terrorist group” and injuries to 210 others.
