Thousands of women beauty salons shut doors as Taliban ban comes into force

Thousands of women beauty salons across Afghanistan are to shut their doors as the Taliban ban deadline approaches.

Early this month, the Taliban the Taliban announced a total ban on all beauty salons across Afghanistan, citing them to be in contradiction with Sharia. The salons were given until Tuesday 26 July to close down.

The ban on beauty salons, according to estimates, will leave over 60,000 women unemployed, is one of the over 50 restrictions the Taliban has imposed on women and girls since seizing power in August 2021.

Last week, the Taliban violently dispersed a group of women protesting against the ban in Kabul with tasers and gunfires.

Despite condemnations and please from women inside Afghanistan and human rights organisations outside, the Taliban has refused to reverse the ban.
