Nehad Radio, a prominent radio station in the northern province of Balkh, has recently suspended its operations due to financial difficulties.
Najib Paikan, the station’s owner, told KabulNow that in addition to financial difficulties, the exorbitant electricity costs, a lack of support from funding institutions, and challenges in access to information forced the radio station to cease its operation in early July. Additionally, Paikan stated that their TV broadcasts on social media have also been discontinued.
Despite the Taliban’s takeover, the media outlet had managed to continue broadcasting, but it has now been forced to halt all activities. As a result, 25 individuals, including seven women, have lost their jobs, according to Paikan.
Nehad Radio was founded by Najib Peykan 16 years ago in Mazar-i-Sharif, the capital of Balkh province. The station suffered significant damage to its equipment and building due to a mysterious fire on February 27 of this year.
The decline of media outlets in Afghanistan has been a troubling consequence of the Taliban’s ascension to power. With over half of the country’s media organizations ceasing operations, the financial challenges and the Taliban’s restrictions have been key contributing factors.
