Iranian Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, in a telephone conversation the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has called for international support in managing “over five million” refugees from Afghanistan in Iran.
In a statement in Persian on Saturday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry stated that the UN Secretary-General expressed appreciation for Iran’s significant role in hosting Afghan refugees and stressed the importance of international support for Iran.
According to the statement, during his discussion with Guterres, Amirabdollahian positively assessed the recent United Nations meeting on Afghanistan in Doha, Qatar.
Regarding the Doha meeting on Afghanistan, Guterres has stated that all parties agree on the establishment of an inclusive government in Afghanistan, combating terrorism, bolstering the Afghanistan economy, addressing drug production and trafficking, and upholding the rights of women in terms of education and employment.
The closed-door meeting in Doha, held on the first and second days of May, involved the UN Secretary-General and special representatives from several countries. In a subsequent press conference, Antonio Guterres said that the gathering was to develop a common global approach to Afghanistan. He emphasized that all participants agreed on an engagement strategy aimed at ensuring stability in Afghanistan.
The UN chief said that he had agreed to host another similar meeting after a round of consultations with participants.
