Amnesty International: UN Security Council has fallen short to restore the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan

In a statement released on Thursday, Amnesty International criticized the UN Security Council’s recent resolution on the situation of women and girls in Afghanistan as insufficient in protecting their rights.

While the UN resolution condemned the ban on women’s work in Afghanistan, Amnesty International noted that it failed to hold accountable those responsible for the systematic violation of women’s rights or set out clear steps for restoring these rights.

Amnesty International wrote: “While a welcome step in the right direction, the resolution failed to include the need to hold accountable those responsible for the systematic violation of rights. It also fell short of setting out concrete steps the members of the Security Council should take to support ongoing efforts to restore the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan and keep the Taliban as de facto authorities accountable for their grave and systematic violations of women and girls rights.”

According to this organization, despite Afghanistan’s obligations under international human rights law, the Taliban has continued to abuse the rights of women and girls, making international pressure and action all the more necessary.

“This resolution must be accompanied by maximum international pressure that sends a clear message to the Taliban that the rights of women and girls are not up for negotiation – they are universal and inalienable.” The statement added.

Amnesty International emphasized the need for the Taliban to adhere to the UN Security Council resolution and demanded the cancellation of the group’s restrictive decisions against the rights of women and girls, including work and education.

The UN Security Council passed a resolution on Thursday, condemning the Taliban’s ban on women in Afghanistan working for the United Nations. The council called on the Taliban leaders to “swiftly reverse” their crackdown on the rights of women and girls.
