UNESCO: Taliban’s ban on women’s education risks a lost generation

According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Afghanistan is the only country in the world that prohibits women and girls from receiving an education. The organization has warned that this ban could result in a lost generation in the country.

According to UNESCO, the percentage of female teachers in Afghanistan increased by 9% between 2007 and 2018, rising from 27% to 36%.

In March 2022, the group barred girls from secondary education, and in December of the same year, it banned women from universities.

These bans on women were followed by worldwide condemnations and repeated calls to be reversed but the Taliban responded with imposing more restrictions on women.
