Taliban publicly flog five people in Paktia province

The Taliban publicly flogged five people in the eastern province of Paktia on Wednesday

In a statement posted on Twitter by the group’s Supreme Court, it said that the individuals receiving the punishments had been convicted of “robbery, running away from home, moral corruption, and publishing prohibited images on social media”.

Although it is unclear whether a woman was among those punished, the Taliban often whip women for the crime of “running away from home”.

Since returning to power, the Taliban, under the order of its supreme leader, Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada, has made public floggings a key part of its penal practices, which the UN and others have condemned.
