Humanitarian Aid Distribution Process Halted in Daikundi

Sources in Daikundi province report to Kabul Now that the humanitarian aid distribution process by the United Nations (UN) has been halted in this province.

A source talked to Kabul Now on Wednesday, December 14 that the officials of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) took this decision along with its partner agencies.

The decision to stop the aid distribution process in Daikundi was made after a delegation team visited the province to review the process.

The organization, however, has not detailed the reason for this decision but some sources told Kabul Now that the Taliban’s involvement in the distribution process, the existence of corruption, the lack of identifying the real needy, and poor-quality food assistance made the organization halt the process.

At the same time, another source says that the Taliban officials in Daikundi had a meeting with the tribal elders and advised them on how to force the aid organizations to resume the aid distribution process.

The Taliban officials have said that they support the aid organizations and have assured that they[Taliban] will not allow anyone or group to interfere in the aid distribution process in this province, the source added.

The process of humanitarian aid distribution has always been criticized. In some provinces, there are claims of corruption in this process and it is reported that these aids do not reach the needy.

In some areas, the needy say that aid organizations distribute poor-quality and outdated food assistance.

Earlier video clips of poor-quality and rotten food assistance were shared among social media users and these users criticized the food assistance and distribution process and the aid organizations as well.
