India, Russia Urge Taliban to Fulfill Its International Commitments

Foreign ministers of India and Russia held a round of talks on Tuesday in Moscow, according to the Ministry of External Affairs of India. The two sides have urged the Taliban which is currently ruling Afghanistan to fulfill its international commitments.

“On Afghanistan, we discussed how to continue our support for the people of Afghanistan, even as we urge Taliban to fulfill its international commitments,” India’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. S. Jaishankar was quoted as saying in a readout of his press statement issued on Tuesday, November 08.

India’s foreign minister is in Moscow to hold “regular consultations” with Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. He has also met the country’s Deputy Prime Minister, Denis Manturov.

He said that India and Russia are members of various formats where they would come up with issues related to Afghanistan. “We will continue to be in close touch,” he asserted about India and Russia’s approach towards issues of Afghanistan.

India has always expressed concern about terrorism threats emanating from Afghanistan.

Since the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, India has repeatedly asked the Taliban not to let Afghanistan soil be used to pose a threat to other countries.

The ruling Taliban has close ties with Pakistan. It is another concern for India which has always blamed Islamabad for sponsoring terrorism and Islamist terrorist groups operating in the region.
