Afghanistan elected to UN Economic and Social Council for 2022-2024 term

Afghanistan has been elected as a member of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for 2022-2024 term in the UN General Assembly (UNGA) on Monday, June 08.

The UN ECOSOC President, Munir Akram, wrote on his twitter that the UNGA has elected 22 new members for the UN’s ECOSOC body. Afghanistan, Belgium, Belize, Canada, Chile, Côte d’Ivoire, Croatia, Czech Republic, Eswatini, India, Italy, Kazakhstan, Mauritius, Oman, Peru, Tunisia, United Republic of Tanzania and the United States are the newly elected members.

Of the 193 UN member states, 181 countries supported Afghanistan’s bid to the UN’s economic body which is composed of 54 nations, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).

The ECOSOC’s membership is of special importance for Afghanistan as it enters a new chapter of political and economic relations with the world, the MFA said in a statement issued today, June 09.

The Economic and Social Council is at the heart of the United Nations system to advance the three dimensions of sustainable development – economic, social and environmental.

Moreover, Afghanistan had also nominated to chair the 76th UN’s General Assembly, as the MFA noted, but Maldivian nominee, the country’s Foreign Minister Abdullah Shahid, was elected garnering 143 votes.

The MFA has thanked all countries who voted for Afghanistan’s membership for 2022-2024 term in UN’s ECOSOC body.
