Afghanistan produced over 74,000 tons of cotton

Afghanistan has produced a total of 74,022 metric tons of cotton in 1399 (solar year), the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock (MAIL) said in a statement issued today, Wednesday, April 14.

The country’s cotton production has increased slightly as compared to the previous year 1398 (73,119 metric tons) and more than 10,000 tons, compared to the year before, 1397 solar year (57,450 metric tons).

Producing 28,321 tons of cotton in 1399, the northern Balk province stands on the top rank of the cotton-producing provinces, followed by Helmand, Kunduz, Nimroz, Takhar, Jowzjan, and Baghlan provinces.

The provinces of Samangan, Sar-e-Pul, Badghis, Kunar, Faryab, Nangarhar, Herat, Laghman, and Kapisa are the provinces where cotton is cultivated at a large sum, according to the MAIL.

A total of 56,740 acres of lands were cultivated with cotton over the last year all across the country, the statement said, adding that the northern Balkh province (21,785 acres of cotton cultivated land) had the largest lands cultivated with cotton in 1399. The southern Helmand province is the second largest province of cotton cultivation.

According to the MAIL, cotton has a high demand in national and international markets.

Afghanistan is a landlocked country where a vast majority of the population depends on agriculture to provide a living.
