Khalilzad visits Doha to resume peace talks

US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad landed in Doha, the Qatari capital, to resume Afghan peace process with the Taliban leaders. Suhail Shaheen, a spokesperson for the Taliban political office in Qatar, has told Radio Azadi that Mr. Khalilzad has arrived in Doha to resume Afghan peace process.

The US-Taliban peace talks was put on halt on December 13, following a Taliban attack on Bagram Airbase, a US military facility in the northeast of Kabul.

The Taliban leaders, who represent the group in Doha, have refused to sign a truce, something the Americans have been demanding as a precondition to peace settlement.

The US-Taliban peace talks is expected to restart while the Taliban militants have shown no mercy to stop killing civilians. In most recent case, the group shot dead two civilians in Darah Sof district of Samagan province.

The visit comes days after a US drone strike killed a top Iranian commander Qassem Soleimani in Iraq.

Iran has influence over a large number of Taliban commanders in the west of the country.
