As many as 17 people lost their lives and 22 others were wounded as result of flashflood, heavy rains, and snowfalls in different parts of the country, according to sources.
Eight people were killed and 13 others wounded as result of roof collapses caused by heavy rains hit the southern Kandahar province on Sunday, January 12, said Baheer Ahmadi, spokesperson for Kandahar governor. He said the incidents happened in Spin Boldak and capital city of the province.
Mr. Ahmadi stated that flashfloods have hit Zhari and Panjwayi districts of the province, adding that the ongoing rainfalls have also inflicted some financial losses in the province.
In a separate incident caused by heavy snowfalls, six members of one family were killed in Injil district of the western Herat province, according to Aminullah Amarkhel, police chief of Herat province.
Jilani Farhad, spokesperson for Herat governor, said that all highways leading to Herat city have been blocked due to heavy snowfalls. He, however, added that they have already taken measures to open the highways.
Flashfloods have killed at least three people and wounded nine others in Kajaki district and capital city of the southern Helmand province, Lashkargah, said spokesperson for the province governor, Omer Zwak. He added that dozens residential houses have been destroyed either partially or completely as the result of flashfloods caused by heavy rainfalls in the province.
Afghanistan Meteorological Department has predicted that there will be heavy snowfalls and rains, which are likely to cause flashfloods, avalanches, and other related incidents for five days in different parts of Afghanistan.
