Richard Bennett Calls for Independent Investigation into Killing of Former Afghan Military Personnel in Iran

Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan, has called for an independent investigation into the killing of General Ikramuddin Saree and Mohammad Amin Almas, both former members of Afghanistan’s security forces, in Iran.

In a post on X on Monday (29 December), Mr. Bennett expressed deep concern over the killings, stressing that those responsible must be identified and held accountable.

General Ikramuddin Saree, the former police chief of Takhar province, and Mohammad Amin Almas were shot dead last Wednesday in Tehran’s Valiasr Square.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmail Baghaei, said on Monday that investigations into the killing of the two former Afghan military personnel are ongoing.

Political groups opposed to the Taliban in Afghanistan have alleged that the killings were carried out by the Taliban and have urged Iranian authorities to pursue the case with seriousness.
