Young Girl Commits Suicide in Daikundi

A credible source in Daikundi province, in central Afghanistan, reports to Kabul Now, that a 19-year-old girl in this province committed suicide by hanging herself and ended her life.

The source identified the girl as Arefa. She was accepted at Balkh University to pursue Journalism and she wanted to be a journalist. The incident took place on Thursday afternoon, December 15 in Katjik in the center of Daikundi province, the source confirmed to Kabul Now.

Talking to Kabul Now, at least three residents of Katjik village told that the girl’s family, due to poverty, did not agree with her to continue her studies at Balkh University.

The girl’s family had forcibly engaged her to a man without her consent, one of the sources added.

Refusing to allow her to pursue her studies and forcibly engaging her to someone else without her consent are reported as the main causes of this suicide.

Over the past year, there has been a significant increase in the number of youths committing suicide on various pretexts in different provinces. Poverty, unemployment, depression and forced marriages are considered the main reasons for suicide in the country.

In a recent case, a teenage girl and a young woman committed suicide in the northern Parwan and Faryab provinces.

Sources in the city of Maimana, the center of Faryab, in northern Afghanistan had reported that a 22-year-old boy in this province committed suicide by hanging himself and ended his life.

On November 22, a young girl committed suicide in the eastern Nangarhar province after her family engaged the girl to a man without her consent.
