Family of poet detained by the Taliban expresses concerns about his fate

Relatives of Haseeb Ahrari, a poet from Panjshir province, have expressed their concerns as the Taliban have not disclosed the reason behind his arrest, even after a period of 45 days.

The family members of Ahrari were recently allowed to briefly meet him at the 40th directorate of the Taliban intelligence, where he is being held by the group.

Ahrari informed his family that the Taliban has not disclosed the charges against him.

Haseeb Ahrari was arrested by the Taliban at his home in Kabul on June 1, 2023, shortly after returning from Iran.

Ahrari, originally from the Anaba district of Panjshir, had sought refuge in Iran following the Taliban takeover. He had recently returned to the country and settled down with his family in Kabul.

The motives behind his arrest still remain unclear, as the Taliban have yet to provide any explanation.

PEN International, an association of writers based in the United Kingdom, expressed concerns about Ahrari’s detention last month and called for his immediate and unconditional release from Taliban custody.
