Gunmen kill policewoman in Kandahar

Unknown armed men have shot and killed a policewoman in PD15 of Kandahar city while she was heading to her work in Panjwayi district of the province, a local source confirmed.

Talking to Kabul Now, Jamal Nasir Barakzai, spokesperson for Kandahar police, identified the female police officer as Zakira. He added that the incident took place around 10:30 Am on Friday, June 04, in Qalacha Balochan area of PD15.

No individual or group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.

This is not first incident in which a female police officer is targeted in Kandahar. Several policewomen have been assassinated in the province in the past as well.

Afghanistan has seen a dramatic rise, especially in major cities, in the level of targeted violence which has so far claimed scores of lives from government workers, journalists, civil society activists, tribal elders, and religious scholars.

Though the government blame the Taliban for these targeted violence, the militant group often remain tightlipped and occasionally reject some targeted killing.

Located in the southern part of the country, Kandahar is a volatile province where the Taliban controls swathes of territories.
