Local sources report that a former soldier was killed in the Paryan district of northeastern Panjshir province.
The soldier, identified as Zikrullah, was shot dead in his home in Qala village on Sunday night, sources said.
The motive behind the killing is unclear.
One source suspected that the Taliban was behind it while other sources said “personal enmity” was the cause.
Taliban authorities in the province have not commented.
Panjshir has been the center of a conflict between armed anti-Taliban groups, including the National Resistance Front (NRF) and the Taliban for two years. During this time, the Taliban have detained, tortured, and killed scores of former soldiers and civilians, often accusing them of collaborating with the armed front or possessing weapons.
Human rights organizations have repeatedly expressed concern over serious human rights violations against ex-military personnel and civilians by the Taliban in Panjshir, saying the group has committed war crimes.
