Uzbekistan plays an important role in Afghanistan, US envoy says

The US Special Representative for Afghanistan, Thomas West, recently met with Uzbekistan’s Special Representative, Abdulaziz Komilov, to discuss the situation in Afghanistan.

In a tweet on Saturday, West welcomed the meeting and said that the US would continue its diplomatic efforts and assistance to the people of Afghanistan.

“Uzbekistan continues to play an important and active role in Afghanistan diplomacy and in support of the Afghan people.” West said.

The US Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs (SCA) highlighted that the discussion between West and Komilov centered around “shared interest in regional security and prosperity.”

Since the Taliban takeover in August 2021, the US Special Representative for Afghanistan has traveled to several regional countries to advance US interests related to Afghanistan, holding talks with officials including in Pakistan, the Middle East nations of Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, and Central Asian countries.

West’s recent trip to Uzbekistan follows his last trips to the UK and the United Arab Emirates.
