Unexploded ordnance leaves six children dead and wounded in Faryab

An unexploded ordnance has killed three children and injured three others in the Khwaja Sabz Posh district of the northern Faryab province.

The ordnance exploded when the children were playing with it in their home in Shabakhto village on Sunday.

A 17-year-old girl and two children aged between seven and ten were killed as a result of the explosion and three children sustained injuries, said Mohammad Yousuf, a close relative of the victims.

The injured children were shifted to a hospital in Balkh province.

Yousuf noted that the explosive munition had been kept in their home for long.

According to the UN, Afghanistan has one of the highest levels of explosive ordnance contamination in the world and $18.3M is needed for survey, explosive ordnance disposal, and landmine clearance in 2023.

Recently, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Afghanistan reported that more than 700 children were killed or maimed because of unexploded ordinances and remnants of war in 2022 across the country. This is an average of two children every day.
