Taliban governor, 60, marries 16-year-old girl after paying family $30,000

The Taliban’s governor of eastern Laghman province, Zainul Abidin, has married a 16 year old girl after paying 2.5 million Afghani ($30,000) and 6 acres of land.

According to a source, Zainul Abidin, believed to be 60, married the teenage girl in the Sangarah village of Alingar district on Sunday.

Zainul Abidin, who has been a Taliban commander in the province, has also paid for a house for the girl’s parents in the provincial capital, Mihtarlam, as well the promise of money for her brothers to be smuggled to Europe.

According to the source, Zainul Abidin, had sought a permission from the Taliban’s supreme leader, Mullah Hibatullah, to marry the girl as his second wife.

Taliban officials in the province have not commented.
