Shia ulema call on the Taliban to lift Muharram restrictions

The Council of Shia Ulema of Afghanistan has called on the Taliban to lift all restrictions on the country’s Shias to observe Muharram. 

After an extraordinary meeting on Saturday, the council said that the Shia communities in across Afghanistan want the restrictions imposed on them to be lifted. 

The Taliban has ordered the Shia communities to refrain from erecting decorative flags and symbols on public spaces. The group has also imposed on the number of places processions can be held. 

The Taliban has previously said that Shias are free to practice their beliefs.
