Father’s violent outburst over Eid clothes leaves two children dead in Parwan

Local sources in the Bagram district of Parwan province have reported that a man opened fire on his children on Sunday, killing a boy and and a girl, as well as injuring two.

According to a person familiar with the incident, the man, a truck driver, fired at his children with an AK-47 rifle, after they asked for new clothes for Eid.

Drug addiction has been reported to be behind the man’s deadly outburst. He remains at large.

Taliban officials in the area have not commented.

Drug addiction has been a longstanding social problem in Afghanistan, the world’s biggest producer of opium, and other illicit substances, including methamphetamines.

There are an estimated 3.5 million addicts in the country, a number that accounts for nearly 10% of the population. People are driven to drugs mainly due to persistent poverty, a high unemployment rate, and lesser life quality, among other factors.
