14 year old boy takes his own life in Kandahar province

Local sources in Kandahar province’s Maiwand district say that a 14 year old boy took his own life by hanging on Saturday.

A Taliban official said that the teenager, identified as Ahmad, had been suffering from mental health issues.

Ahmad’s brother, the official said, had also taken his life some time ago.

Afghanistan has seen a sharp rise in suicide rates since the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021. Women and girls are particularly at risk.

Poverty, unemployment, family violence, depression, and mental illnesses are considered to be the key contributors to these incidents.

Support Independent Journalism in Afghanistan

Your support helps us sustain independent journalism, publish accurate and fair reporting, expose corruption, and amplify the voices of those who are silenced. Our journalists work in difficult, and at times dangerous, conditions to ensure that the lives, suffering, and struggles of ordinary people are not erased or forgotten.
