Teenage girl commits suicide to escape forced marriage in Sar-e-Pul

A 15-year-old girl has committed suicide by hanging herself in Kohistanat district of the northern Sar-e-Pul province on Tuesday after his father engaged her to a man without her consent, local sources confirmed.

Speaking to KabulNow, a source identified the teenage girl as Fahima who had been forcibly engaged to a man for 700,000 Afghanis ($8000), a practice that has become all too common in Afghanistan since the Taliban takeover of the country.

Despite Fahima warning her father that she would kill herself, if forced into the marriage, her father proceeded with the engagement, the source detailed.

After the Taliban takeover in August 2021, there has been a significant increase in the number of youths committing suicide mostly for various reasons.

Forced marriage, domestic violence, depression and unemployment are said to be the major factors behind most of the suicide cases in the country.
