US peace envoy met President Ghani

The US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation, Zalmay Khalilzad, met with President Ghani at the presidential palace today, Monday, May 03, said a statement issued by the presidential palace.

The US envoy briefed President Ghani about the latest progress in the peace process.

Peace is an urgent need of the people of Afghanistan but the peace process must proceed in accordance with the reality of Afghanistan Ghani told Khalilzad, according to the statement.

Last week, Zalmay Khalilzad told US Congress that the future of Afghanistan peace will depend on the political settlement the Afghans make.

On April 14, US President Biden announced that all US troops would leave Afghanistan by September 11 this year. Following the Biden announcement, top US diplomats visited Kabul to assure the Afghan government that the United States would continue to support the Afghan government and Afghan security forces.

Yesterday, the US forces officially began a phased withdrawal from Afghanistan. Milley said that withdrawal might finish before September 11, a date set by the Biden administration.
