Armed Opposition NRF Strikes Taliban After Months of Lull

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN –  The armed resistance group, the National Resistance Front (NRF), says that its operatives have killed three Taliban members and injured five others in two separate attacks in the capital Kabul.

In a statement released on Thursday, March 28, the NRF said that both attacks occurred on Thursday evening.

According to NRF, it carried out the first attack on a Taliban checkpoint near the Sham-e-Paris Hotel, a wedding hall, in Kabul’s 4th district, killing two Taliban members and injuring three others.

The second attack took place in the 11th district of Kabul city where NRF operatives targeted a Taliban stronghold near the Lewa-e- Baba Jan area, resulting in the death of one Taliban member and the injury of two others.

NRF also highlighted that none of its forces suffered any casualties in these operations.

Led by Ahmad Massoud, son of the jihadi commander Ahmad Shah Massoud, the NRF is an armed group composed largely of former security forces. Alongside another anti-Taliban group, the Afghanistan Freedom Front (AFF), they have engaged the Taliban in deadly battles, mainly in the northern and northeastern provinces.

In recent weeks, both Taliban opposition groups have intensified their guerrilla attacks against the regime in power in several provinces of Afghanistan, including Kabul.

On March 28th, the NRF asserted that they had eliminated Mawlawi Siddiqullah, a local Taliban commander, along with his bodyguard in the Tala-o-Barfak district of northern Baghlan province.

Two days ago, on March 27, the group claimed to have killed three Taliban members and injured two others at a checkpoint in the Dahan-e-Bagh neighborhood of Kabul’s second district.

Taliban authorities have yet to comment on these attacks.

In its annual report, released on March 19, the National Resistance Front claimed that during the solar year 1402 (March 21, 2023, to March 18, 2024), its fighters killed and injured over 400 Taliban members.

NRF said that during this time period, it conducted 150 guerrilla operations against the Taliban in 17 provinces of Afghanistan, resulting in the deaths of 194 “Taliban terrorist group” members and injuries to 210 others.

“Some of these operations occurred in significant and strategic locations, including the Kabul airfield’s air force section and the surrounding areas of the Presidential Palace, targeting some of the Taliban’s military and security leaders,” NRF said.

According to the NRF statement, 17 of its members including its commanders Taher and Qamaruddin Andarabi were killed and five others were injured.

“It is noteworthy that in 1402, in addition to planning and conducting military operations, the National Resistance Front forces also focused on capacity building, organizational development, and enhancing their combat capabilities for more effective confrontation with the enemy,” NRF statement added.
