The Taliban police in southern Kandahar province has reported the death of a woman in mysterious circumstances.
The woman is reported to have died of suicide in the Aino Mina neighbourhood of Kandahar city on Thursday. But locals have said she was murdered by her husband.
A Taliban police official has confirmed that the woman’s husband has been detained, and that an investigation into the matter is currently underway.
The group’s officials have disclosed that the deceased woman had been married and divorced twice in the past. On the other hand, local sources in the province claim that the woman was shot by her husband, highlighting a history of marital discord.
Afghanistan has seen a sharp rise in suicide rates since the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021. Women and girls are particularly at risk, and poverty, unemployment, domestic violence, and depression are believed to be the key contributors to these incidents.
