UNHCR provides financial aid to over one million Afghanistan refugees in Pakistan

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has provided cash assistance to over one million registered Afghanistan refugees in Pakistan who have been impacted by the economic crisis and recent floods.

In a statement on Wednesday, UNHCR Pakistan revealed that the cash assistance program, conducted in partnership with the Government of Pakistan, officially concluded in June after being launched in January 2023.

“UNHCR’s one-off cash grant of up to PKR 25,000 or approximately USD100, depending on family size, supported a total of 250,000 Afghan refugee households in Pakistan,” part of the statement reads.

Ms. Noriko Yoshida, the UNHCR Representative in Pakistan was quoted in the statement as saying: “It was imperative to provide cash assistance to refugees in line with the support that was provided by the government to the people in Pakistan.”

The total expenditure on cash assistance for Afghanistan refugees since January amounted to $17.8 million.

According to UNHCR, Pakistan hosts more than 1.3 million registered refugees from Afghanistan and an additional 427,000 individuals in refugee-like situations as of the end of 2022.
