Woman commits suicide by consuming acid in Kunduz province

A woman committed suicide by consuming acid in the PD 3 area of northern Kunduz province on Thursday, said local sources.

One source identified that the victim was an 18-year-old woman who was pregnant and took her life and the life of her child at 11:30 pm in the Hamid Bai village.

The source suspected “domestic violence” as the cause of the woman’s death.

Jumauddin Khaksar, Taliban’s security spokesperson in the province, confirmed the incident but said the woman was not pregnant.

Khaksar told KabulNow that the woman was engaged and ended her life by consuming acid before hanging herself.

However, another source refused if the woman had hanged herself and said that the woman succumbed in a hospital.

Afghanistan has seen a sharp rise in suicide rates since the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021. Poverty, unemployment, domestic violence, and depression are believed to be the key contributors to these incidents.

Investigative data compiled by Etilaatroz and KabulNow shows that over the past year alone, a staggering total of 110 men and 103 women committed suicides across 28 provinces.
