Taliban restrictions on women not sharia

US Special Representative warns of global threat over Taliban’s women’s rights abuses

US Special Representative for Women’s Rights in Afghanistan, Rina Amiri, has warned that the Taliban’s endorsement of women’s suppression poses a significant threat to women’s rights worldwide.

In a tweet on Wednesday, after speaking at an event, Amiri said, “As I underscored, those that tacitly normalize the Taliban’s systemic repression of women in Afghanistan create a dangerous precedent, putting the rights of women everywhere at risk.”

Since the Taliban’s return to power, they have unleashed a wave of oppressive measures on women, systematically denying them access to education and work.

Despite repeated appeals from numerous countries, human rights organizations, and UN agencies, the Taliban leadership has refused to reverse its bans on women’s education and work and has continued to impose restrictions on women and girls.
