Police in Pakistan has arrested an Afghan journalist, Assadullah Sultani, in the city of Hyderabad in Sindh province, for unspecified reasons, according to Afghanistan Journalists Support Organisation (AJSO). The AJSO says that there is no information about the journalist’s whereabouts.
AJSO condemned the detention of Asadullah Sultani “arbitrary arrest” and asked the Pakistani government to release him. “We urge organizations in Pakistan and around the world which support journalists not to hesitate to legally address Sultani’s case and for his release,” the AJSO said in a Facebook post on Monday.
The AJSO has not said when the Afghan journalist was arrested.
The Taliban’s take over of Afghanistan in August 2021 forced hundreds of Afghan journalists and those working in the country’s once vibrant media organisations to flee to Pakistan, with some resettled in the West and many living in limbo waiting to have their applications processed.
