Nearly two days after Ashraf Ghani was declared as winner of Afghanistan 2019 presidential election, European Union and India congratulated him though his main rival, Abdullah Abdullah has already contested the official announcement of final results.
Following final announcement of official results of the 2019 presidential elections, Mr. Abdullah announced that he would form his own inclusive government and called on the foreign embassies to remain impartial.
“The European Union looks forward to continuing the work with the new administration under President Ghani,” a statement issued by EU late last night, February 19, reads. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrel, welcomed Ghani’s commitment to form an inclusive government, the statement said.
Hours later, the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), also issued a statement. “As part of the mandate conferred on it by the Security Council, UNAMA has provided support to Afghanistan’s electoral authorities and their work, and will continue to do so in the period ahead,” the statement reads.
The UN mission also said that it stands ready to welcome and work with the future administration.
With two days passed since the results are out, most of other foreign diplomatic missions in Kabul remain hesitant to comment or congratulate completion of the process and Ghani’s re-election for another term in office.
Although the US Embassy in Afghanistan has yet to comment regarding the election results, a renowned US senator Lindsey Graham has congratulated Ghani on winning the election on his official twitter account.
India has also congratulated Ashraf Ghani on his re-election. “We congratulate President Dr. Ashraf Ghani on his re-election following the announcement of final results of the Presidential elections by the Independent Election Commission of Afghanistan,” a statement issued by Indian foreign ministry said.
