Badakhshan gold mine collapse kills two and injures one

At least two miners were killed and another wounded when a roof collapsed in gold mining in the eastern Raghistan district of Badakhshan province.

According to Hekmatullah Mohammadi, Taliban’s head of the information and culture department in the province, the incident occurred on Sunday afternoon in the district’s Zarandab village when the miners were gold-washing inside the mine.

Local residents were able to rescue one miner.

In January, several miners were rescued from under the rubble when a gold mine roof collapsed in the Yawan district of Badakhshan.

Badakhshan has the largest gold-bearing quartz veins system in the country. Non-standard mining and disregard for safety precautions are among the reasons miners lose their lives across Afghanistan.

In 2019, at least 30 people were killed after gold mine collapsed in Kohistan district of Badakhshan.
