Unknown gunmen shot dead religious scholar in Sheberghan

Unknown gunmen shot dead a religious scholar in Sheberghan, the provincial capital of Jawzjan, local sources said on Sunday, July 25.   

Ahmad Masoud Nadim, the spokesperson for Jawzjan police, told Kabul Now the incident took place yesterday evening, July 24, around 6:00 PM in front of a mosque in Karte Mawlana Jalaludin Balkhi.

The religious scholar who a prayer leader at the mosque named Rafiullah.

The motive behind the assassination remains unclear but efforts are underway to arrest the culprits.  

The Ministry of Hajj and Religious Affairs has also confirmed the incident.

This comes while last month gunmen assassinated a religious scholar in Kapisa.

Afghanistan’s major cities, particularly the capital Kabul, have witnessed a huge increase in target killing of influential figures, religious scholars, and journalists in recent months.

In the latest orgy of violence, five people were found dead on Friday evening in Dasht e Naseri area of Guldara, a district located 45 km to the north of Kabul.  

No group has claimed responsibility for these assassinations in Jawzjan and Kabul.
