KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – Two women were killed after the roof of a mud house collapsed following heavy rainfall in Afghanistan’s Maidan Wardak province, local Taliban authorities said.
The incident occurred on Wednesday in Jaghatu district, according to a statement from the Taliban governor’s office in Maidan Wardak. The victims were aged 15 and 22.
Authorities said heavy rainfall caused the roof of the mud-constructed house to collapse.
The incident is the latest in a series of similar cases reported across Afghanistan in recent weeks, as heavy rains, flash floods, and snowfall continue to affect large parts of the country.
Taliban authorities say more than 20 provinces have been impacted by severe weather in recent weeks, with dozens of people reported dead or injured, many of them women and children.
According to figures from the Taliban’s disaster management authority, at least 190 people have been killed and around 250 others injured over the past month due to weather-related incidents, including house collapses.
Thousands of homes have been damaged or destroyed, farmland has been affected, and many families have been displaced.
Afghanistan remains highly vulnerable to seasonal weather extremes, particularly in rural and mountainous areas where homes are often built with mud and other fragile materials, making them susceptible to collapse during heavy rainfall.
