General Ikramuddin Saree, the former police chief of northern Takhar province under Afghanistan’s previous government, was assassinated in Tehran on Wednesday, December 24, sources told KabulNow.
A friend of Saree, in an audio recording shared with KabulNow, said he was killed by unknown assailants. the exact location of the attack, the identity of the perpetrators, and the motive behind the killing remain unclear. Iranian authorities have not commented.
Ikramuddin Saree served as the police chief of Takhar province from 2019 until the collapse of the former Afghan government. He left Afghanistan for Iran, following the Taliban’s return to power.
In several media interviews after his departure, Saree had strongly criticized Taliban policies, particularly the arrest, torture and killing of former members of the Afghan security forces. After the fall of the previous government, many former security personnel fled to neighboring countries, fearing reprisal from the Taliban. In recent years, some have been deported for lacking legal residency documents, with many detained upon returning to Afghanistan and numerous others killed in mysterious attacks across the country.
The killing of Saree comes just months after another commander close to former Jihadi commander Ismail Khan was assassinated in Mashhad, Iran, highlighting a pattern of attacks targeting former Afghan officials in the country.
